What is a furoshiki?

Invented in Japan hundreds of years ago, this zero-waste gift-wrapping technique is making a big comeback. Traditionally, furoshiki refers to the art of folding a piece of fabric to wrap gifts or everyday items. Today, the term also refers to the fabric square itself.

Practical, beautiful, and budget-friendly, this eco-friendly wrapping method is a great alternative to traditional wrapping paper — which generates over 20,000 tons of waste every year. With furoshiki, you can wrap all kinds of objects by simply adjusting the fabric size and using a folding technique adapted to your gift.

What fabric should I use for furoshiki wrapping?

To fold your furoshiki easily and beautifully, the choice of fabric matters.
Since furoshiki is meant to be reused for years, opt for quality fabric.
When it comes to prints, we recommend double-sided patterns, as some folding methods reveal both sides of the fabric.

As for size: your furoshiki should typically be three times larger than the width of your object.
For example, if your gift is 33 cm wide, use a fabric square around 99×99 cm.

If you're comfortable with sewing, you can make your own furoshiki by finishing the edges of your fabric. You'll find plenty of inspiration in our selection of fabrics sold by the meter.
