How to Choose the Right Bib for Your Baby or Child? Practical Guide

Are you an expecting parent or a new parent feeling overwhelmed by the choice of something so essential: the bib (or baby bib)? Babies grow (way too) fast, and their needs evolve just as quickly. A bib should adapt to every stage of your child’s life but many questions arise: what size to choose, which material, which type of fastening...? This article will guide you in choosing the best bib for your child and help you build the perfect baby registry.

What bib material should you choose based on your child’s age ?

From 0 to 5 months, your baby is mainly fed with milk.

Whether by bottle or breastfeeding, a few drops of milk often trickle down your baby’s neck while feeding, which can lead to irritation. At this age, babies also tend to spit up quite a bit. The best solution to avoid changing your little one ten times a day? An absorbent terry cloth bib. Super soft and highly absorbent, terry cloth is ideal for newborns to catch milk dribbles and small spit-ups.

Around 5 months, it’s time for solid foods.

With the start of solid food, purées and baby cereals usually end up all over your child’s shirt. At this stage, a terry cloth bib is no longer enough it won’t hold in solid foods. This is where a stain-resistant bib made of rigid plastic or waterproof coated fabric comes in.
The coated fabric bib has several advantages:

  • It’s flexible and comfortable, allowing baby to move freely without the risk of discomfort or injury from stiff plastic.

  • It folds easily and fits neatly in a diaper bag, unlike rigid models.

  • It’s easy to clean: machine washable, or just wipe it down with a sponge between meals.

From 5 to 8 months, teething begins… and so does the drool!

With those first tiny teeth comes a flood of drool. To keep baby feeling dry and comfy, we once again recommend the terry cloth bib, which absorbs excess saliva and helps keep your little one happy and you too!

Bib Shapes: From Classic to Extra-Large, They Grow with Your Child

The Bandana Bib: Stylish and Absorbent

No need to choose between performance and style.
The bandana bib is perfect for babies aged 0 to 6 months. Small in size, it effectively catches milk dribbles and spit-up while adding a fashionable touch to your baby’s outfit. It’s also a great choice during teething—keeping baby’s look adorable and their clothes clean.

The Classic Bib: A Must-Have That’s Proven Its Worth

The classic bib (27 x 18 cm) is a nursery essential. Slightly larger than the bandana bib, it offers better coverage to help avoid stains. It’s perfect during the pre-solid food stage.

The Waterproof Bib: Mealtime’s Best Ally

Once baby starts eating solids, it’s time for a bigger bib!
The coated waterproof bib measures 36.5 x 26 cm and is ideal for babies over 6 months old. It provides generous coverage and lets your little one explore new tastes without ruining their outfit.

The Elastic Bib Towel: XXL Size for Independent Kids

Your little one is growing up and wants to do everything on their own.
The elastic bib towel is easy to slip on without help and promotes independence while keeping mealtime tidy. With its large format (35 x 31 cm), it covers your child’s chest and shoulders and is often required by preschools and daycare centers.
Made of soft terry cloth, this bib is designed to last from 6 months to 3 years—perfect for long-term use and fewer messy outfits!

What type of fastening should a bib have?

Tie, Velcro, snap, or elastic which bib closure is best? With so many options out there, let us help you focus on what really matters: choosing something useful and practical.

  • Velcro fastening

Easy to put on and even easier for parents to remove, Velcro closures are perfect for younger children who can’t take the bib off themselves. It’s also a safe option, as there's no risk of injury even if they tug on it.

  • Elastic neckline

For toddlers eager to be independent, a bib with an elastic neck is the perfect choice.
It’s so easy to slip on that even young children can put it on by themselves. Plus, the elastic is covered in soft cotton fabric, making it gentle and comfortable to wear.

How many bibs should you have?

The number of bibs you’ll need per day depends on your child’s age, as well as how much they spit up or drool.
In the early months (0–6 months), we recommend having around 3 bibs per day to avoid doing emergency laundry.
As your child grows and gets less messy, one bib a day is usually enough.
