DIY Bee-Wrap: How to Make Your Own Zero-Waste Food Wrap

You’ve probably already heard about it  and we’ve tried it for you! In this tutorial, discover how to easily make your own bee-wraps using Papa Pique et Maman Coud fabric.

What is a bee-wrap?

A bee-wrap is a piece of fabric coated in beeswax that can replace plastic wrap to cover bowls or wrap food. It's reusable, easily washable with a sponge, and helps you reduce waste in the kitchen.

While we no longer offer ready-to-use bee-wraps at Papa Pique et Maman Coud, you can still make your own at home  it’s easy, fun, and eco-friendly!

Ready to give it a try? Follow this simple DIY tutorial and start creating your own zero-waste food wraps.

What you’ll need to make your bee-wrap:

  • Cotton fabric from Papa Pique et Maman Coud (you can also use cotton scraps)

  • Beeswax pellets (we recommend organic)

  • Baking paper

  • Fabric scissors

  • An iron

Step-by-step: How to make a bee-wrap with an iron

Step 1: Cut your PPMC fabric

Cut your PPMC fabric into a square (or rectangle) depending on the size of your container. Use your dishes as a guide to determine the right size for your bee-wraps.

Step 2: Cut the baking paper

Cut two large sheets of baking paper one for underneath and one for over the fabric large enough to protect your iron and work surface from melted wax.

Step 3: Add the beeswax

Place your fabric on a sheet of baking paper. Sprinkle beeswax pellets evenly over the fabric, then cover with the second sheet of baking paper.

Step 4: Iron to melt the wax

Heat your iron and gently press it over the top layer of baking paper. Let the wax melt completely and make sure it spreads evenly over the fabric.

Step 5: Let it dry

Quickly peel the fabric from the baking paper and shake it gently to cool and set the wax.

And just like that, your homemade bee-wrap is ready to use! Repeat the process with different fabric sizes to create wraps for all your needs. (Tip: you can reuse the same baking paper multiple times.)

How to use your bee-wrap

Bee-wraps are perfect for everyday use. You can use them to cover bowls or wrap individual foods. They’re fridge- and freezer-safe but not microwave- or oven-safe, as the heat could melt the wax.

Always wait until your food has cooled before covering it with a bee-wrap.

What can you wrap with a bee-wrap?

Almost anything! Use it to wrap bowls, fruit, vegetables, bread, or snacks.
Just avoid wrapping items with high liquid content or raw meat and fish, as they pose a hygiene risk.

How to wrap food with a bee-wrap:

  1. Place the food or container in the center of the wrap.

  2. Fold the fabric around it.

  3. Warm the edges slightly with your hands so the wax sticks to itself.
Your food is now safely wrapped and ready to be stored!

How to care for your bee-wrap

Cleaning is easy: just wipe your bee-wrap with a sponge and some cold water and soap. Avoid hot water, as it can melt the wax.

Once clean and dry, your wrap is ready to be reused!

How long does a bee-wrap last?

A bee-wrap can be reused about 100 times, or for around 1 year. If it starts to lose its effectiveness, you can revive it by gently ironing it again between two sheets of baking paper and it’s good to go!
