How to Make a Cute Pom-Pom Bookmark

Have you taken advantage of your time at home to get back into reading? We have too! So we thought why not share a quick DIY tutorial to make reading even more fun?

In this article, you’ll learn how to make an easy pom-pom bookmark. It’s simple, colorful, and can even be made with kids perfect for a cozy craft session!

Difficulty: ★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)

What You’ll Need

You don’t need much for this DIY just:

  • Yarn (even that forgotten skein at the bottom of a drawer will do)

  • Scissors (even kids’ safety scissors work great!)

Step-by-Step Tassel Bookmark Tutorial

You can follow the steps below or watch our video tutorial!

Step 1: Cut a 40 cm Yarn Strand

Cut one piece of yarn about 40 cm long and set it aside. We’ll use it in Step 4.

Step 2: Wrap the Yarn Around Your Fingers

Take your skein of yarn and wrap it around your fingers several times. The more yarn you wrap, the fluffier your tassel will be!

Step 3: Slide the Yarn Off Your Fingers

Gently slide the bundle of wrapped yarn off your fingers. Be careful to keep its shape intact as you set it down.

Step 4: Tie with the Yarn Strand from Step 1

Take the 40 cm yarn piece you cut earlier and place it under the bundle, across one side like you're going to insert it through the center but don’t! Just lay it under the yarn.

Then tie a double knot over the top of the bundle with this piece of yarn.

Step 5: Cut the Loops

Cut through all the yarn loops on both sides of the knot.
Make sure you cut every loop so the tassel strands are all separated.

Step 6: Trim the Tassel

Give your tassel a nice, even shape by trimming any uneven strands of yarn.

Step 7: Use the Long Yarn Tail as the Bookmark

If you followed step 4 correctly, you should have one long piece of yarn sticking out of the tassel.
That’s what you’ll use to mark your page the tassel will hang outside your book while the yarn sits between the pages.

You Did It!

Now you have a colorful handmade bookmark that adds charm to your reading sessions and your kids’ too!
