DIY Furoshiki: How to Make Your Own Fabric Gift Wrap

Have you heard of Furoshiki, the Japanese art of wrapping gifts with fabric? It’s a stylish and sustainable way to package your presents. In this DIY Furoshiki tutorial, we'll show you how to create your own reusable gift wraps using fabric!
Difficulty level 3/5

Sewing Your Furoshiki:

Furoshiki is a zero-waste alternative that lets you wrap your gifts in a unique and eco-friendly way.
To get started with this DIY project, here’s what you’ll need:

Materials:

  • Fabric (preferably cotton—it’s easier to fold)

  • An overlocker (serger)

  • Scissors or a thread cutter (thread cutter is more precise)

  • A small ruler

  • Matching thread (prepare 3 spools for the overlocker)

Step 0: Prepare Your Machine and Fabric

Fill the spools with thread that matches your fabric. Cut a piece of fabric large enough to wrap your gift.
Tip: Multiply the size of the object by three to determine your fabric size. In this tutorial, we used three sizes: 35x35 cm, 45x45 cm, and 72x72 cm (based on a 360 cm fabric width).

Step 1: Sew One Side of the Furoshiki

Lay the fabric flat with the printed side facing up and overlock one side, as shown in the video. Once done, leave a bit of thread at the end to cut before moving on to the next side.

Step 2: Trim the Thread

Using your thread cutter, remove any thread that sticks out from the fabric edge.

Step 3: Sew the Other Sides

Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the remaining three sides of the square.

Step 4: Final Touch

Trim all excess threads for a neat finish.

Your eco-friendly gift wrap is now ready to be tied!

How to Tie a Furoshiki

Here are a couple of classic Furoshiki folding techniques:

Sao Tsutsumi – For wrapping books or rectangular items

  1. Place your item in the center of the fabric, wrong side up.

  2. Fold two opposite corners over the item and tuck them under.

  3. Take the remaining two corners and tie them in a knot over the center of the item.

This method can be adapted to different fabric sizes.

Yotsu Musubi – For wrapping square objects (easier method)

  1. Place your object in the center, aligning it with the fabric corners.

  2. Tie one pair of opposite corners into a knot above the object.

  3. Tie the remaining two corners into a second knot to secure.

Now you’re ready to make your own Furoshiki wraps and surprise your loved ones with thoughtful, reusable gift packaging.
