DIY Sewing Tutorial: Christmas Scrunchie Wreath

Today, Maguy invites you to create a festive Christmas wreath using XXL scrunchies with our special holiday DIY.

Would you like to make your own Christmas decorations this year? Treat yourself to a fun and original scrunchie-based wreath! At Papa Pique et Maman Coud, scrunchies are kind of our thing so we thought: why not turn them into a wreath?

This is a simple project, even for beginner sewists.
Let’s get started with our step-by-step sewing tutorial!

Difficulty level 1/3

What You’ll Need for the Scrunchie Wreath

  • 3 rectangles of coordinating cotton fabric

    • 150 cm x 24 cm (e.g. Bulle Bronze Marine)

    • 150 cm x 18 cm (e.g. White Glitter fabric)

    • 150 cm x 12 cm (e.g. Mandarina)

  • 1.5 meters of craft wire

  • 1 meter of ribbon (gold or sparkly ribbon works best)

  • 1 open jump ring (like those used in jewelry)

  • Small gold pompoms

Step 1: Sew the Three Fabric Tubes

For each of the three rectangles:

  1. Fold lengthwise, right sides together, and sew the long edge, starting and ending about 8 cm from each short end (leave the ends open).

  2. Turn the tube right side out.

  3. Join the short ends together, right sides facing, and sew to form a loop.

Step 2: Turn the Tubes into Scrunchies

  1. Cut three 50 cm pieces of craft wire.

  2. Bend one end of the wire slightly, and insert it into the fabric tube. Thread it all the way through without letting go of the other end.

  3. Hook the ends of the wire together to close the loop.

  4. Fold the seam allowances of the opening inward and sew the opening closed by hand or with a close edge stitch on your machine.

Repeat for all three fabrics you now have three structured scrunchies.

Step 3: Assemble the Wreath

  1. Stack the three scrunchies, placing the widest on the bottom.

  2. Adjust the gathers evenly around each scrunchie.

  3. Stitch them together by hand at four points top, bottom, left, and right from the inside of the circle, to hold the layers in place.

Step 4: Final Touches

  1. Thread all your gold pompoms onto the jump ring and close it.

  2. Slide the ribbon through the ring and tie it around the three scrunchies, adjusting the bow gently so it doesn’t compress the wreath.

  3. Slide the pompoms into the center of the wreath and adjust as needed.

Step 5: Ta-da!

That’s it your scrunchie Christmas wreath is ready! Hang it proudly and admire your handmade creation.

You can use any fabrics you like for example, Maguy used Silver Linen and Mandarina fabrics from Papa Pique et Maman Coud to give her wreath a vibrant touch. These same fabrics were used in the Tote Bag Malo tutorial.
