Discover Your PPMC Boutiques – Episode #1 – Belle-Île-en-Mer

The Papa Pique et Maman Coud web team came up with the idea of creating a Tour de France of our boutiques.
The goal? To showcase all our stores, the cities where they are located, and the local activities they offer.
We’re kicking off this adventure with the aptly named Belle-Île-en-Mer!

Getting to Belle-Île

To reach the island, you have several options. You can depart from Quiberon for a 46-minute crossing with Compagnie Océane. You can also travel from Port-Navalo, Locmariaquer, Vannes, or even La Turballe and Le Croisic via La Navix, La Compagnie du Golfe, or Les Vedettes du Golfe.

Must-Sees on the Island

Belle-Île is full of stunning places to visit. One day is far from enough to explore the entire island, which is why we recommend staying at least three days to fully enjoy it and take in all the breathtaking scenery.

Pointe des Poulains

After chatting with some locals during a refreshment break, we received some valuable advice. According to them, one place you absolutely must visit is Pointe des Poulains.

Located at the far northwest of Belle-Île-en-Mer, it’s accessible after a 15-minute walk from the entrance parking area. You can easily reach it when the tide is low.

Here, you’ll find three distinct yet complementary sites to visit in half a day: Maison du Littoral, Poulains Lighthouse, and Fort Sarah Bernhardt.

Port of Sauzon

Continuing our conversation with these friendly locals, we learned that Port of Sauzon is another must-see spot on the island.

This charming little port will delight both young and old. Its colorful houses are exactly the kind of charm we love at PPMC. The lively quays, stacked with fishing crates at all hours, will leave you with fond memories of the island.

Other Sites to Explore

  • Aiguilles de Port Coton
These rock formations inspire visitors’ imaginations — some see a dog, a wolf, a hen, or even a sphinx. Their name comes from the foam created by waves crashing against them during heavy seas, resembling cotton sails.

  • Grand Lighthouse (Goulphar Lighthouse)
Located in Kervilahouen, just before reaching the Aiguilles de Port Coton, this 52-meter-high lighthouse was built between 1826 and 1835. After climbing its 247 steps, you’ll be rewarded with a panoramic view of the entire island (weather permitting). The ground floor features a permanent exhibition about lighthouses and the local environment.

  • Church of Locmaria
Romanesque in style, this is the oldest religious building on the island.

  • Donnant Beach
Situated on the island’s wild coast, its impressive waves and breathtaking setting make it a favorite among surfers. The beach is also known for its beautiful sand dunes, shaped by the wind.

Getting Around the Island

Belle-Île is large and hilly, so having a motorized vehicle is recommended to get from one side to the other.

During our day, we used electric bikes rented from Driv’in Belle-Île. We think electric bikes are a great alternative to cars for exploring without getting too tired. You can also rent all types of vehicles cars, motorbikes, or regular bicycles and use taxis or the island’s public transport.

Visit the PPMC Boutique

The Papa Pique et Maman Coud boutique in Belle-Île is located near the ferry terminal in Le Palais:
30 Grande Rue, 85330 Noirmoutier-en-l’Île.

It is one of four PPMC boutiques that sell fabric by the meter. The store is open from April to October, seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
