Creating Brings Calm: The Benefits of Sewing

Choosing a fabric, imagining a project, cutting and assembling the pieces…
Sewing is much more than just a creative hobby.

For many people, it’s a special moment.
A moment to slow down, focus on a simple gesture and set aside the noise of everyday life.

When the hands are busy, the mind can rest.

At Papa Pique et Maman Coud, this idea resonates deeply with us. Since the very beginning, our love for fabrics and beautiful prints has inspired creativity and encouraged people to create with their own hands.

But why does sewing bring such a feeling of calm and well-being?

Interview: Camille’s passion for sewing with PPMC fabrics

Camille, a sewing enthusiast and creator of the Instagram account @augredemestrouvailles, shares her passion for sewing with PPMC fabrics and the fabrics that inspire her creations:

I am very happy to be Papa Pique et Maman Coud’s ambassador this month. This brand has always been part of my story. As a child, I already wore the hair clips and accessories, and I remember very well visiting the La Baule shop with my parents. Even today, the brand is still with me: I’m lucky to have the Angers shop just a few minutes from home, and now I go there for my children.

There is something very beautiful in this idea of passing things on, of seeing objects and patterns travel through generations.

The fabrics and prints that make me melt? I especially love the brand’s classic and timeless patterns. Gingham, Oxford fabrics, floral prints… Some of them remind me directly of my childhood: the little ladybirds, the colourful fabrics we used to wear when we were young. They are true Proustian madeleines for me.

My turning point with sewing

Sewing came into my life with motherhood. While looking at children’s collections, I realised I could not find exactly what I had in mind. So I started sewing for my daughter Madeleine, creating the wardrobe I had always dreamed of for her: classic, timeless clothes with that little retro charm I love so much. And since then, I have become completely hooked on sewing.

Creating has become a real moment for me. When I sew, I focus entirely on my project and forget everything else. It requires attention and precision, and in the end it brings a great deal of calm to the mind.

“Creating from start to finish: thinking, imagining, pattern-making, sewing…
and having the joy of seeing it worn by my children.”

And then there is that deeply rewarding feeling of making something with your own hands. Imagining a piece, choosing a fabric, cutting, assembling… and slowly watching the project take shape. I love starting with a simple piece of fabric and turning it into a unique garment, designed and made from A to Z. And the greatest reward is seeing my children wear what I have sewn for them. It brings me real pride, and so much joy.

Why does sewing feel so good?

Sewing requires attention and precision.

Choosing your fabric, cutting the pieces carefully, following the lines, assembling… each step invites you to focus fully on what you are doing.

In those moments, the mind no longer wanders.
You are simply there, in the present moment.

That is why so many sewing enthusiasts describe sewing as a soothing activity.
It allows you to slow down, breathe, and reconnect with a simple, tangible gesture.
Creating then becomes a true pause in everyday life.

The pleasure of creating something with your own hands

Sewing also has something deeply rewarding about it.

Starting with a piece of fabric and slowly seeing a pouch, a garment or an accessory appear brings great satisfaction.

You imagine, you choose, you assemble… and suddenly, the project takes shape.

This creative process brings a very special sense of accomplishment: that of having created something unique.
And when the item is worn or used, the satisfaction is even greater.

For many enthusiasts, sewing becomes much more than a simple hobby: it is a moment for themselves, a way to express their creativity and slow down the pace of everyday life.

The love of fabrics at Papa Pique et Maman Coud

At Papa Pique et Maman Coud, it all began with a passion: a passion for fabrics.

When Nam created the brand, it was first and foremost the prints that inspired her.
Delicate flowers, graphic motifs, designs full of poetry.

Even today, fabrics remain central to our world.
Most of our patterns are imagined by illustrators we work with. We then rework the colours, the scale of the motifs and the harmonies in order to create collections that complement one another throughout the seasons.

Each fabric is designed to inspire creations: accessories, clothing, everyday sewing projects…

Because behind every fabric, there is always the same desire: the desire to inspire creation.
