The piping

What is piping? 

Piping in sewing is a narrow, cylindrical strip of fabric, often made from a flexible strip of fabric over a cord or padding cord. It is used to add decorative detail or to highlight the contours of a garment, accessory or furnishing item. Piping is usually inserted between two layers of fabric and sewn in place, following the contours of the project. It can be used to highlight seams, edges, pockets, zippers or any other element where a decorative finish is desired. 

When to use piping

Adding piping can give relief and structure to a garment or sewing project. It can also be used to create contrasts in color or texture, by using piping in a different color from the main fabric. The use of piping requires a certain amount of precision when sewing, as it must be inserted and sewn on evenly and uniformly. However, once mastered, this technique can add a touch of sophistication and professional finish to your creations.
